KNIFE CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Wipe the blade clean after each use. Handwash with soap and water if necessary. Do NOT put in dishwasher!
The carbon content in 1095 steel can rust if not properly cared for. Dirt build up can trap moisture causing rust to form. Contact with high acid content foods can also cause oxidation to occur.
CLEAN
DRY
Keep the blade free from moisture build up. Avoid storing in damp environments. Leather can trap moisture.
Prolonged contact with moisture will facilitate the oxidation process. Simply wipe the blade and handle dry before storage. Allowing the blade space to “breath” in storage is preferred, this allows evaporation to take place.
PROTECT
Apply a thin coat of food grade oil or wax to the blade and handle to repel moisture.
Oil and wax repel water, having a thin layer on a dry blade is the best way to protect it long term. A healthy coat of oil on porous wood handles also protects against deterioration.
MAINTAIN
Preserve the cutting edge by using a leather stop with stropping compound after heavy use.
1095 Steel has excellent edge retention and restoring an edge is relatively easy if it happens to suffer heavy abuse.
